Fight the Winter Blues!
Missing flowers in the middle of winter? Shrubs and trees that bloom early in the spring form their flower buds before winter. After a few weeks of cold, these buds are just waiting for warm weather so they can burst out. That means you can force them to bloom early by cutting a few young branches and placing them in water in a bright, indoor location.
Remember to change the water regularly to avoid mold.
Good candidates for forcing include forsythia, red bud, and even azaleas!
