Winter's Coming: Can Plants Come Inside?

Once we have a hard freeze, a light covering won’t protect plants. Without a grow-light, sun loving plants won’t get enough sunlight if you move them indoors.  But if you have super-shady plants you are in luck!  Shade-loving plants will do fine indoors all winter long.  They just need the bright, indirect light near a sunny window (south- or west-facing is best).

Don’t be afraid to cut plants back if they are too big for your space. It’s easiest to move pots before you water (when the soil surface is dry).

To avoid bringing bugs in with the plants, inspect the stems and undersides of leaves – a wet paper towel will wipe away any small insects or eggs.

Over the winter, keep checking your soil for dryness regularly, but you’ll find plants need watering less often than they did outside. Remember to turn the container every few days so all the plants get sunlight.
